A tribute to Gunta Stölzl – The only female master at the Bauhaus and textile pioneer.
Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Wassily Kandinsky. Famous names at the Bauhaus, renowned school of architecture and applied arts. Gunta Stölzl? Known to just a few. But the work of the Swiss, with German roots, was groundbreaking. Under her leadership, the textile class has become the most profitable unit at Bauhaus Dessau and gained international attention. Nevertheless, Stölzl and her students mostly fell into oblivion. At the Bauhaus itself, the fear of the “strong” over the “beautiful” sex (quote by Walter Gropius) was very substantial. The silk scarf collection «leBauhaus» pays tribute to this unique and innovative textile pioneer and her oeuvre.
The collection «leBauhaus» pays tribute to this highly idiosyncratic master. In 1923 Stölzl created one of her most colourful and graphic designs at the Bauhaus Weimar. Strictly arranged surfaces and lines alternate with bright colours to create a magnificent overall picture. The design was originally intended for a carpet.
Inspired by this early work leFoulard created a new interpretation. The collection «leBauhaus» – a colourful silk scarf collection in three basic colours “Indigo“, “Coral“ and “Saffron“ – was created in close collaboration between the descendants and the designer Sarah Maret. The 10 colours are printed individually in the original silk-screen printing method. Each piece is uniquely crafted by traditional manual work.
The silk scarf collection «leBauhaus» is hand-printed in the last Silk Screen Factory of Switzerland. In the Swiss Village of Mitlödi in Glarus, the patterns are printed on pure silk twill (120 x 120 cm) using the original silk-screen printing process. Each of the 10 colours with a separate screen-printing form. The hems are hand-rolled in the Swiss canton of Appenzell – a dying craft. The dyes are certified according to Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, washable and skin-friendly. The silk is fair-traded and ecologically produced according to the Global Organic Textile Standard GOTS.
